The lunch room as a meeting place

Lunch is no longer the obligatory half-hour to eat your sandwich. The canteen used to be tucked away at the back of the office; an uninspiring space that had to be effective above all else. Which resulted in an unsociable space with plastic chairs.

Today, the lunch area is increasingly given a central place in the office. Nowadays, it is much more a multifunctional place that also serves as a reception or meeting area, where meetings can be held or successes celebrated. What should you consider when designing a lunch area where people can easily come together?

5 tips for a lunch space as a meeting place:

  • Offer various ways of sitting; low, high, a lounge or a reading table
  • Choose the right materials and finishes so that the space is easy to maintain and clean
  • Make sure people enjoy spending time there. Good coffee, for example, is a good draw
  • Besides meeting and having lunch, you also need to be able to work, make sure technology is in order
  • Modular, movable or stackable furniture for flexible use of the space
